Yesterday a commercial caught my attention. The commercial began with a woman in the stillness of winter. She was looking up snapping a photo in a state of reflection. The words were particularly moving to me.  She said “ I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I knew the woman that I wanted to become“. The woman was renowned designer Diane Von Furstenberg. She then went on to say that “fashion was absolutely an accident in my life“. I thought wow, here is one of the world’s most successful fashion designers and she stumbled upon the field of fashion.

Here is the video of the commercial below.

Fashion may not have been her mission but the woman she wanted to become was. In January Furstenberg, interviewed with Amanda Christine Miller VP of  Nike Communications and contributor to the Huffington Post. Furstenberg told Miller “I’ve always been inspired by women, and my mission was to inspire women“.  Furstenberg, is a success because she had a personal mission. I realized that millions of new designers aspire to reach the highest levels of achievements. Many fashion entrepreneurs know that they are on a mission but they forget to define it. A mission is the foundation of why your fashion line, blog or publication exist. The first step in your creative process should be to establish a mission.

Here is a sample of three mission statements.

LEVI STRAUS COMPANY

People love our clothes and trust our company. We will market the most appealing and widely worn casual clothing in the world. We will clothe the world.

EBAY

eBay’s mission is to provide a global trading platform where practically anyone can trade practically anything.

LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesy)

The mission of LVMH group is to represent the most refined qualities of Western “Art de Vivre” around the world. LVMH must continue to be both synonymous with both elegance and creativity. Our products and the cultural they embody, blend tradition and innovation, and kindle dream and fantasy.

Here are three questions to ask yourself when creating your mission statement.

1. What do I want to do?

2. Who will I serve?

3. What is my ultimate goal?

These three questions will certainly aid you in establishing your mission statement.
